A Dark Malfunction

A Dark Malfunction is an action survival game where you must avoid hostile drones and the darkness that quickly consumes your mind. You must keep the lights on using fuses you find as you frantically search for fuel that the backup generator desperately needs.

Development

This game was developed for a University Brief at SAE, where we were required to create “an interactive music video” or “gameplay revolving around music” that evokes emotion correlative to the provided track. The group and I chose 33 Ghosts IV, by Nine Inch Nails and designed the core loop around an unnerving and stressful experience. This was achieved by creating a dark environment with the scarce placement of lights. The dark consumed the player and the robots, turning them hostile and acting as obstacles for the player to traverse. This combined with the countdown and unnerving music creates a stressful experience as the player frantically explores an unfamiliar environment.

I was responsible for: AI Development, using state machines and Unity’s pathfinding; 3D Modelling, creating the robot’s and a handful of custom assets and; Level Design, using a provided asset pack and adhering to game design principles. Work was done remotely, using Zoom for class workshops, Discord for meetings, Hackn’Plan for task tracking, and GitLab/ Sourcetree for source control.
